Drawing on his collaborative work with Manuel Clemens (University of Vechta), Ashok Collins (SLLL, ANU) will talk to us about the assumed opposition between learning as a process of self-cultivation (Bildung) and learning as a form of vocational training (Ausbildung). The presentation will challenge this oppositional understanding that underlies curriculum design in language teaching and propose a new conception of play that bridges the distinction between Bildung and Ausbildung.
